CAIR Welcomes N.C. Resolution to Move Confederate Statue, Calls for Rejection of Alabama Bills to Protect Confederate Monuments

(WASHINGTON D.C., 2/10/22) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a resolution by the town council of Edenton, N.C., calling for the removal of a Confederate monument from its location at the town’s waterfront.

The unanimous resolution does not state where the monument will be moved to and only states that a move is intended in the future.

Last year, CAIR supported the removal of the statue from a public street but expressed concern about moving it to public property.

Washington, D.C., based CAIR also called for the rejection of two bills in the Alabama legislature designed to protect Confederate monuments and criminalize those who attempt to remove them. The bills come as some 73 Confederate monuments were removed or renamed in 2021, leaving 723 left in the United States.

“We support all efforts nationwide to remove any monuments celebrating the treason, white supremacy and systemic racism represented by the Confederacy,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “Public officials should be acting to remove these symbols of hate, not protecting them.”

He noted that CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate flags, statues and symbols from public spaces nationwide.

Hooper said the American Muslim community and CAIR stand in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
