CAIR Calls for Firing of Va. High School Football Coach Over Reported Racist Harassment of Student

(WASHINGTON D.C., 2/9/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called for the firing of a football coach over his reported racist harassment of a student athlete at a Virginia high school.

Last month, a student at Henrico County’s Hermitage High School reportedly recorded the school’s junior varsity football coach berating him with offensive remarks, including racial slurs.

The coach had allegedly been harassing the student for months prior, and the student’s mother had reported it, but no action had been taken. According to the student’s mother, school officials stressed the need for discretion in dealing with the issue. The school district said they are addressing the situation but provided no further details.

“No school district should tolerate an adult targeting a child with racist harassment and bullying,” said CAIR National Communications Coordinator Ismail Allison. “We urge the school district to take swift and appropriate action, up to and including firing the coach, and to provide anti-racism training to all staff to ensure no such incidents occur in the future.”

He said the American Muslim community and CAIR stand in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
