(WASHINGTON D.C., 2/8/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today supported a call by South Dakota Voices for Justice (SDVJ) for citizens of that state to urge lawmakers to reject a bill that would ban anti-racism teaching in schools.
House Bill 1012, which would ban the teaching of critical race theory (CRT) in state schools, will be heard by South Dakota’s House Education Committee tomorrow. South Dakota Voices for Justice issued an action alert calling on South Dakotans to submit testimonies to the state’s House of Representatives opposing the bill.
“We urge South Dakotans to call on state lawmakers to oppose this attempt to prevent students from learning about the reality of systemic racism and white supremacy in our nation,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
He noted that CAIR has previously opposed attempts to ban anti-racism teaching in South Dakota and nationwide.
