(WASHINGTON D.C., 2/8/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on the West Virginia legislature to reject bills targeting anti-racism teaching.
Senate Bill 587 would require a hot line for tips about the teaching of critical race theory that would be sent to school boards. [NOTE: CAIR recently called on Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin to drop a newly-announced tip line for parents to report teachers who instruct their students about systemic racism.]
HB 4011 would ban the teaching and discussion of specific racial and non-discrimination topics often categorized as “critical race theory.” A number of other bills related to critical race theory have been introduced this session.
“It is disturbing to see West Virginia lawmakers engaging in the manufactured hysteria over simply teaching our nation’s youth about the negative and very real impact systemic racism and white supremacy have on American society,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
He noted that yesterday, CAIR’s Kentucky chapter urged that state’s senate to drop a similar bill that would restrict anti-racism teaching.
