(WASHINGTON D.C., 2/3/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed Idaho legislation that would remove racist covenants from housing deeds.
A bill recently approved by a state senate committee would let Idaho homeowners ask their county clerks to put a note in their housing deeds stating that racist covenants banning members of minority communities from buying the property are void. The bill would also prohibit all deeds after July 1, 2022, from including racist language.

“We support this effort to help remove the legacy of white supremacy from our society,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We call on Idaho lawmakers to approve the bill and urge elected officials nationwide to take action against systemic racism and bigotry.”
Hooper also condemned false claims by Idaho Republican Rep. Dorothy Moon that critical race theory (CRT) is being taught to “kids from infancy to pre-K” in the state.
“This kind of fear mongering and propaganda stifles the ability of teachers to educate our youth about the history of racism in our nation,” he said.
Hooper noted that CAIR has previously supported efforts to remove racist language from housing covenants in Kansas and Wyoming.
