(WASHINGTON D.C., 4/3/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned the alleged racist harassment of a Black Virginia teacher by one of his students.
That history teacher at Menchville High School in Newport News, Va., says a student left a banana at least six times in the same spot at his classroom door. The alleged harasser, one of the teacher’s students, was reportedly caught on surveillance video. The student was placed on a two-day suspension and removed from the teacher’s class.

“Learning environments should be welcoming and safe, whether for students or teachers,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We condemn this alleged racist harassment of a teacher and urge school officials to take appropriate action to ensure this type of incident does not occur in the future.”
He said the American Muslim community and CAIR stand in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Asian and anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, antisemitism, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
