CAIR-Missouri Welcomes School District’s Decision to Mark Eid al-Fitr

(ST. LOUIS, MO, 4/29/2022) – The Missouri chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Missouri) today welcomed a decision by the Mehlville School District to observe the Eid al-Fitr holiday marking the end of the month-long Ramadan fast.

Mehlville’s School Board decided to add Eid al-Fitr to next year’s school calendar as a holiday, reportedly after studying attendance trends. The holiday is expected to fall on or about April 21 next year. The decision to recognize the holiday coincides with an increase in the district’s Muslim population, with up to 50 percent of students observing the month-long Ramadan fast on some campuses.

[NOTE: The Eid ul-Fitr (EED-al-FITTER), or the “feast of fast breaking” holiday, is celebrated by Muslims at the end of Ramadan, the month on the Islamic lunar calendar during which Muslims abstain from food, drink and other sensual pleasures from break of dawn to sunset. Many communities hold multicultural bazaars and other family activities following Eid prayers.]
