(CANTON, MI, 5/28/2022) – The Michigan chapter of Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI), a chapter of the nation’s leading Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomes ethnic intimidation charges brought against a white male who allegedly assaulted and used racial slurs against Black shoppers in a Dearborn, Mich. market.
Earlier this month, Jason Edward Lucas reportedly yelled racial slurs at two Black patrons at Westborn Market in Dearborn while attempting to run them over with his car and threatening them with a baseball bat. After conducting interviews of witnesses and viewing video footage, the Dearborn Police Department charged Lucas with four counts of felonious assault, ethnic intimidation and habitual assault.

“We welcome the arrest and robust charges filed against the individual who allegedly committed these anti-Black hate crimes at a Dearborn market,” said CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid. “Given recent racially-motivated violence, such as the tragic massacre in Buffalo, it is important that law enforcement officials and prosecutors charge violent white supremacists within the fullest extent of the law.”
He said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and white supremacy.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
