CAIR Supports West Virginia NAACP Call for County Resolution Rejecting White Supremacy

(WASHINGTON D.C., 8/25/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today supported a call by the NAACP for West Virginia’s Jefferson County Commission to pass a resolution rejecting white supremacy.

That county commission recently failed to take action on the proposed resolution, which was submitted after a picture surfaced of Jefferson County Commissioner Tricia Jackson posing with two alleged members of the Proud Boys, a white supremacist hate group. Men in the photo were wearing the group’s logo and using the white supremacist “okay” hand gesture. The proposed resolution was written by NAACP Jefferson County President George Rutherford. Commissioner Jackson said the photo was “innocent.”

“The Jefferson County Commission must reject white supremacy and white supremacist groups like the Proud Boys,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “Public officials have a duty to repudiate all forms of bigotry.”

He said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
