CAIR Welcomes Virginia Town’s Decision to Drop Confederate Name for Reservoir

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 10/12/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a vote by the Culpeper Town Council in Virginia to change the name of its main reservoir, which was named after a Confederate artillery officer. What was Lake Pelham is now Lake Culpeper.

The council voted 5-4 Tuesday night to change the name.

“We should never honor traitors to our nation who fought to maintain slavery and white supremacy,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We welcome the town council’s decision as a sign that our nation is turning against systemic anti-Black racism and other forms of bigotry.”

He noted that Washington, D.C., based CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.

Last week, CAIR welcomed approval of a plan to rename several military installations currently named for Confederate historical figures and remove or modify a host of monuments and tributes to the Confederacy.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
