CAIR Welcomes Hate Crime Charges for Wisconsin Anti-Immigrant Incident

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 10/20/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed hate crime charges against an Eau Claire, Wisc., man who reportedly cut his neighbors’ internet cable because they are immigrants.

The man reportedly confronted his neighbors for being “illegal immigrants” before cutting their internet cables. He has been charged with obstructing an officer and criminal damage to property. That charge is upgraded to a felony because it is categorized as a hate crime. He was released from jail on a $1,000 signature bond. He is due back in court at the end of November for a hearing.

“We welcome hate crime charges for this alleged incident of anti-immigrant hate,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “No one should be targeted on the basis of their nationality or ethnic background.”

He said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and white supremacy.
