(WASHINGTON, D.C., 10/18/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today urged Maine’s Lewiston City Council to adopt a resolution condemning a neo-Nazi march that targeted Somali immigrants and others in that city earlier this month.
Today, the council plans to consider a resolution brought forth by the mayor, which states that the city “is proud of its diversity and will not tolerate people or groups who seek to threaten our diverse community.” The resolution comes after a neo-Nazi group held a march targeting the city’s Somali immigrant community earlier this month.

“Community leaders must repudiate white supremacy and xenophobia, and ensure that acts of intimidation targeting minority communities are strongly repudiated,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We urge the Lewiston city council to adopt this resolution as a way to express the city’s solidarity with the targeted communities.”
He noted that CAIR condemned the neo-Nazi march in Lewiston earlier this month.
