(WASHINGTON, D.C., 3/9/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed approval of a hate crime bill by the South Carolina House.
If signed into law, that bill would make the state the 49th to provide harsher punishments for violent hate crimes. South Carolina and Wyoming are the only two states without a hate crime statute. The Clementa C. Pinckney Hate Crimes Act or H.3014 was approved with a vote of 84-31 and now goes to the state Senate.

CAIR recently reiterated its support for the bill after it advanced out of a state House subcommittee.
“We welcome the advancement of this important bill and hope it is taken up by the Senate and ultimately goes to the governor to be signed into law,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
He noted that last month, CAIR supported a resolution passed by the city of Myrtle Beach encouraging the South Carolina governor and General Assembly to adopt a statewide hate crime bill.
