(WASHINGTON, DC – 6/1/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations today marked June 1st as the 29th anniversary of its founding by thanking the tens of thousands of Americans who have helped the organization grow to become the largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States over the past four decades.
In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:
“As CAIR marks the 29th anniversary of our founding, we want to thank the staff, board members, volunteers, donors and community members who have helped us grow into what we are today: the largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States.
“When we began our work with a two-person staff in a tiny office on Washington, DC’s K Street at a time when American Muslims had little public representation and limited legal protections, we were hopeful that CAIR would be able to enhance the public’s understanding of Islam, protect civil rights and advance justice.
“By the grace of God, we have succeeded beyond our expectations with support from the community. So has the American Muslim community, which has grown, strengthened, overcome challenges, and made positive change. We thank everyone who has helped CAIR play a role in this progress.”
As part of a month-long celebration of its 29th anniversary, CAIR is inviting all Americans who support the cause of civil rights to help CAIR expand to new states and assist more people in need of the organization’s free legal services by making a $29 Civil Rights Champion donation.
