CAIR Encourages President Biden and Visiting Swedish Prime Minister to Disavow Islamophobia, Condemn Quran Burning

Muslim civil rights and advocacy group also expresses solidarity with Swedish Muslim community

(WASHINGTON, DC – 7/5/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today encouraged President Biden and Sweden’s prime minister – who is meeting today with the president in Washington, D.C. – to clearly disavow anti-Muslim bigotry and condemn a Quran burning that took place in Sweden last week.

Requests to burn the Torah, Bible and Quran again were submitted to Swedish police, who have said they are processing the requests and did not rule any of them out.

CAIR also expressed solidarity with the Swedish Muslim community, which has faced hate speech, hate crimes and unjust discrimination in recent years.

In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:

“We join Muslim civic organizations, faith leaders and nations around the world in condemning the hateful burning of a Quran that took place in Sweden last week.

“We encourage the Swedish prime minister to clearly disavow such anti-Muslim extremism during his visit to the White House today, and we encourage President Biden to do the same.

“We stand in solidarity with the Swedish Muslim community and the broader European Muslim community as they confront the persist threat of xenophobia, racism and anti-Muslim bigotry.”

He noted that on March 15 this year, CAIR joined an international coalition of Muslim advocacy organizations to issue a joint declaration commemorating the first UN-recognized International Day to Combat Islamophobia, and announcing their intent to cooperate in the global struggle against anti-Muslim bigotry.
