CAIR-FL: Why Palmetto Bay denied a resident request for Islamic holiday greeting on Village media – WLRN

Taha told WLRN he reached out to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights organization, Florida chapter, for advice.

Omar Saleh, CAIR-Florida’s lead attorney, said they are still exploring different legal options with Taha.

Saleh believes the rise of islamophobia — hate, violence, bias and discrimination against Muslims and Arab Americans — is “a direct product of the rhetoric we’re hearing from elected officials.”

Representatives from CAIR also responded to the controversy, condemning Bowles’ actions.

“If Board Member Bowles were to act on these beliefs in her official capacity, it would be an unlawful violation of the Civil Rights Act,” CAIR civil rights attorney Martin Quezada said.

“Muslim students cannot afford a board member who sees them as a threat rather than as children in her care.”

Quezada, a graduate of Centennial High School, also alleged that Bowles used her social media platform to refer to Muslim political participation as “holy jihad” and claim that Islam is not a religion. He called for her resignation and urged the board to censure her if she failed to do so.

Meanwhile, thousands of Palestinians languish in Israeli prisons, hostages who include, very notably, Dr. Abu Safiya, a pediatrician of tested integrity, tortured so maliciously by Israel that he now lies at death’s door. On June 5, the Council on American Islamic Relations urged congress to demand the doctor’s immediate release – he is currently in “solitary confinement,” per CAIR, “despite being held without charges…UN experts say Dr. Abu Safiya has been subjected to torture in Israeli custody,” and quotes Physicians for Human Rights Israel: “He is held in Negev Prison in harsh conditions, without access to medication or medical care as his health continues to deteriorate.”
