CAIR Calls on North Carolina Democratic Party to Address Alleged Islamophobic Remarks by Party Members

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 11/1/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today sent a letter to the North Carolina Democratic Party (NCDP) urging the party to resolve an internal complaint by an individual who has allegedly been subjected to Islamophobic and defamatory remarks by other party members. The complaint was submitted in March 2023, and has reportedly yet to be resolved.

Evidence available to CAIR shows multiple Islamophobic and defamatory comments allegedly made by three individuals. The remarks, if substantiated, include Islamophobic remarks and unfounded claims that resolutions proposed by Nazim Uddin, a member of the Affiliated Organizations Committee of the NCDP, are of a hateful nature following his support of Palestinian human rights in 2022.

Uddin filed a grievance form with the party in March. However, seven months later, the party has reportedly been unable to resolve the complaint according to their procedures.

In response, CAIR issued a letter this afternoon to the NCDP requesting that they work urgently to address Uddin’s complaint, either through adequate mediation or a hearing before the Council of Review, as outlined by their procedures.

“Equal access to justice is a long-held American belief,” said CAIR Research and Advocacy Director Corey Saylor. “We’re asking the party to stand by that belief and immediately work to address the complaint filed by Mr. Uddin, who has been waiting for seven months.”

CAIR’s response comes amid an uptick in Islamophobic rhetoric across the country in response to current events in Israel and Palestine. CAIR continues to encourage those subjected to Islamophobia and/or anti-Arab bias to contact them by filing a report or emailing our Civil Rights Department.
