(BALTIMORE, MD, 1/22/24) — The Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed Senator Chris Van Hollen’s support for a ceasefire in Gaza and urged state lawmakers to cosponsor Delegate Gabriel Acevero’s #CeasefireNow resolution being introduced this week in the Maryland General Assembly.

We need a ceasefire & return of the hostages, & Pres. Biden needs to put forth a big, bold plan for a two-state solution that guarantees Israel’s security – so there are no more October 7ths – and allows for self-determination, security & dignity for the Palestinian people. CAIR is urging members of the Maryland House of Delegates to join the growing number of U.S. lawmakers including Senator Chris Van Hollen and almost 70 percent of Americans and support mounting calls for a Gaza ceasefire by co-sponsoring a new resolution that will be introduced this week in session by Delegate Gabriel Acevero, District 39.
“Each day brings more news of egregious war crimes and carnage committed against civilians in Gaza by the far-right, openly genocidal Israeli government,” said CAIR’s Maryland director Zainab Chaudry. “It is imperative that our lawmakers listen to calls for humanity to prevail by cosponsoring and supporting this commonsense measure. Each day a ceasefire is delayed leads to hundreds more innocent people, mostly children and women, killed.”
Last month, CAIR joined more than 170 Baltimore area organizations at a news conference outside Senator Van Hollen’s Baltimore office announcing a letter calling on him to support a ceasefire.
