The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the passing of the ceasefire resolution by the Minneapolis City Council.
With a veto-proof 9-3 vote, the council passed a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire, an end to U.S. aid to Israel, the release of Palestinian and Israeli prisoners, and other measures to de-escalate farther violence and promote peace.
CAIR-MN started drafting this resolution with diverse coalitions two months ago and has been calling on Minnesota’s Federal Offices to call for an immediate Ceasefire.
In a statement, CAIR-MN Executive Director Jaylani Hussein said:
“We thank the council members, coalitions and community members who have been advocating for this in the last two months. This resolution is not just symbolic, but also very important and powerful, and it highlights how this issue is impacting our local community members and residents of Minneapolis.
“The ball is now in the court of our federal delegation and representatives. They need to listen to their constituents and other American citizens calling them every day to call for a ceasefire. The killings need to stop right now.
“We urge lawmakers at the state and national level to follow Minneapolis’ lead in advocating for peace, justice and human rights in the Middle East.”
The ceasefire resolution aligns with CAIR-MN’s mission to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
CAIR-MN stands ready to support family members and Palestinian and Muslim Americans who lost their family members in this tragedy. The majority vote of the Council Members and diverse coalitions behind this resolution are some of the ways we can combat Islamophobia and Antisemitic in our communities. We believe this vote brings us one step closer to a just and lasting peace for all people.
