The Connecticut chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CT) today condemned a racist verbal attack directed at a woman at a Stamford supermarket after video of the incident went viral online.
According to media reports, the victim was subjected to racist and xenophobic insults while standing in line at a Grade A Market in Stamford. The incident, which was recorded on video, reportedly included statements telling Gupta to “go back to your country” and “stay out of America.”
In a statement, CAIR-CT Chairman Farhan Memon said:
“No one should be subjected to racist abuse while carrying out everyday activities in their community. This disturbing incident is a reminder that prejudice and hate remain persistent challenges that must be confronted wherever they occur.
“Connecticut’s diversity is one of our greatest strengths. We must continue working together to ensure that every resident is treated with dignity, respect, and equal protection under the law, regardless of their race, ethnicity, religion, national origin, or background.”
He noted that CAIR-CT recently welcomed the signing by Gov. Ned Lamont of Public Act 26-77, a comprehensive reform and modernization of Connecticut’s hate crimes statutes.
