Dawud Walid, executive director of the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said the U.S. must avoid getting dragged deeper into the conflict and diffuse tensions by forcing Israel into a ceasefire in Gaza.

“That’s the only solution,” said Walid. “There has to be an immediate ceasefire before the whole region goes up in flames and billions more American taxpayer dollars are spent and maybe more American lives are lost.”

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights group, argued that “the Biden administration emboldened the far-right Israeli government to manufacture this crisis by repeatedly giving it carte blanche to violate international law without any accountability—from murdering journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, to expanding illegal settlements, to committing a genocide in Gaza, to bombing an Iranian Embassy complex in Syria.”

For nonprofit workers who’ve grown accustomed to seeing statements on other issues, leaders’ silence can feel like a double standard at best or, at worst, can seem deeply insensitive to employees’ beliefs and experiences, said Edward Ahmed Mitchell, deputy director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a Muslim civil rights group.

Organizations should either “not comment on international affairs, human rights, and policy issues at all or, if they’re going to comment on those issues, they need to do so in a way that is morally consistent,” he said. “In a way that recognizes the humanity of both Israelis and Palestinians.”
