“This lawsuit is a belated but very important part of the pursuit of justice for the victims of the Abu Ghraib torture abuse scandal. The torture that occurred at Abu Ghraib was just one of the few examples of the torture that we know about among many incidents of torture that we have never been able to fully uncover,” Edward Ahmed Mitchell, deputy director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, told The New Arab.

Jews are not alone in experiencing religion-based instances of intimidation. The Council on American-Islamic Relations‘ annual Civil Rights Report says that last year it received the highest number of anti-Muslim bias complaints ever. CAIR says it took in 8,061 bias reports in 2023 and that nearly half of them came in the final three months of the year, following the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel.

The events at USC have raised concern that other schools will bow to pressure and erode free speech, said Edward Ahmed Mitchell, a civil rights attorney and national deputy director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
“I am worried that schools might decline to select a qualified visibly Muslim student who advocates for Palestine, to avoid what happened at USC,” he said. “Schools are going to do more harm than good if they try to censor and silence commencement speakers, and especially students who have received the honor of speaking at their graduation ceremonies.”

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) reported receiving more than 8,000 complaints last year, the highest number in the organization’s 30-year history. Nearly 42 percent of those complaints were made since the war began.
“Behind each of those numbers is a human being who’s had just an awful experience,” said CAIR Research and Advocacy Director Corey Saylor.
