CAIR Launches Robocall, Text Messaging Campaign Urging Statewide Muslim Community to Vote Today, First Day of Early Voting in Maryland’s Primary Election

Today, on the first day of early voting in the state’s Primary Election, the Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) launched a statewide robocall and text messaging campaign targeting tens of thousands of registered Muslim voter households and supporters of CAIR urging them to vote to help ensure maximum participation in the democratic process.

Early voting: May 2 – May 9

Primary Election Day: May 14

“The timing of this election is crucial as the world witnesses escalating violence and devastation in Gaza and elsewhere combined with a surge of Islamophobia, anti-Palestinian hate and censorship in our state,” said CAIR’s Maryland Director Zainab Chaudry. “By making our voices heard in this election, we can help advance causes and policies that protect the humanity and dignity of our communities.”

The robocall scheduled today will broadcast the following message to over 12,000 Muslim voter households:

“As-salamu alaikum. This is a friendly reminder from CAIR that today, Thursday, May 2, is the first day of early voting in our state’s primary election. The democratic presidential candidates are Joe Biden, Dean Phillips, Marianne Williamson, and Uncommitted. The Republican presidential candidates are Nikki Haley and Donald Trump. It is crucial to exercise your right to vote. Cast your ballot during early voting May 2-9 or on Primary Election Day, May 14. For more information, visit www.cair.com. As a 501c3 organization, CAIR does not endorse candidates for public office. Thank you.”

Maryland is a closed primary state, meaning voters must be affiliated with a political party in order to participate in that party’s primary election. Unaffiliated voters can still vote in down ballot nonpartisan races such as local boards of education.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
