The “Muslim Day at the Capitol” theme of “Local Advocacy for Global Justice” appeared to resonate with attendees as they participated in the 10th annual event sponsored by the Council on American-Islamic Relations’ Oklahoma chapter. Monday’s Muslim Day event was the first held since Hamas militants attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, resulting in the start of the Israel-Hamas war.

On Monday, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) released a video showing the alleged hate crime being committed on May 5 on a Menlo Park pedestrian overpass.

CAIR said a man seen in the video tore down one of the banners put up by two volunteers with the Northern California Islamic Council, calling for peace in Gaza, and then tried to throw it onto the highway.

“Muslim students, I think there’s many competing feelings. On the one hand, there is a lot of disillusionment and frustration with our administrations and, of course, exhaustion for feeling like they are having their First Amendment rights violated, feeling like their free speech is being killed, feeling like they are being scrutinized in a way that’s very damaging, compared to other student populations,” said Dina Chehata, CAIR’s civil rights managing attorney.

Muslim civil rights group CAIR has filed a complaint with the US Department of Education Office of Civil Rights to investigate Mace’s Lane Middle School following the harassment and attack of a 12-year-old Muslim student whose Hijab was forcibly removed at least twice.
