The Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) condemned Rodrigues for the order and urged Floridians “to stand up for our constitutionally guaranteed freedom of speech and for academic freedom in our public university system.”
“It is logical to assume that any courses that are ‘flagged for review’ will be scrubbed of any criticism of the genocidal Israeli government and especially its military,” said Imam Abdullah Jaber, the Florida chapter’s executive director, in a news release.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations is also awaiting a court setting in its lawsuit against Abbott, said William White, Houston director of the nation’s largest Muslim advocacy group. Many of the students he works with at UH are dreading going back to school under the weight of the war abroad, and are generally unsure how they might be treated on campus.
“Administrations still have unclear, vague policies, about what they can and can’t say, or they’re not being up front about where a lot of students stand from last semester,” White said.

The letter, signed by 22 civil society organisations, was addressed to New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams. Among the prominent groups supporting the letter are the Indian American Muslim Council, several chapters of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Hindus for Human Rights, Federation of Indian American Christian Organisations of North America, New York State Council of Churches, Genocide Watch, Dalit Solidarity Forum, Sadhana: Coalition of Progressive Hindus, Sikh Coalition, and Ambedkar King Study Circle.
