CAIR: ‘Enough is enough’: the Muslim American officials who resigned over US’s Israel-Gaza policy – The Guardian

In a Zoom call hosted by the civil rights group Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) on Tuesday, Hassanein and Hala Rharrit, a former US state department diplomat who resigned in April, shared their experiences of witnessing the Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian animus that they say drives the Biden administration’s Middle East policies.

Noting that those who speak out at first against injustices are considered a “marginal fringe,” Edward Ahmed Mitchell, Deputy Director for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), said that history has shown that with the passage of time they are seen for “the wisdom of their ways.” As an example, he cited the Vietnam antiwar movement whose tireless efforts eventually resulted in the US withdrawal from the conflict.

Zahra Billoo, executive director of the San Francisco Bay Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said the organization is open to being brought into the conversation but doesn’t support removing curriculum developed by educators.

“We had opposed this bill because it appeared to be an effort by legislators with an apparent pro-Israel bias to problematically influence ethnic studies,” Billoo said. “I worry that it is disingenuous to malign ethnic studies efforts as antisemitic in the way that some legislators and advocates have attempted to do.”

On Wednesday, the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations will address what they’re calling threats to the Muslim community.

“It is important for our community to see hate crimes called out and prosecuted as the heinous acts they represent,” Afaf Nasher, executive director of the New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said in a statement.
