CAIR: Condemnation urged on attack of pro-Palestinian protester at DNC – The New Arab

Robert McCaw, CAIR government affairs director, told The New Arab that he is concerned about the message this apparent lack of accountability sends to others.

“People felt impunity to attack. Why do hate crimes increase?” he said. “When you’re in a situation where feel like you can attack, and no one will follow up.”

“We condemn this apparently bias-motivated vandalism and urge all community leaders to speak out against the rising bigotry that inevitably results in such attempts at religious intimidation,” said CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher in a statement.

CAIR Manager, Shaimaa Zayan, said her organization is standing in solidarity with people of color in the community, who only feel hurt when they see the monument.

Zayan said, “It’s so painful, especially for people of color, seeing such a monument in a public place, it just reminds them of an era that they’re still suffering the consequences of.”
