The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) National Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said the image of bulldozers desecrating bodies and throwing Palestinian civilians from rooftops “should shock the conscience of all Americans and must result in concrete actions by the Biden administration, which is enabling and excusing Israel’s war crimes”.

The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations denounced the arrest as proof that the local law was being used as a “silencing tactic” against Palestinian supporters.

“Barring other criminal misconduct, wearing a keffiyeh or a mask does not make you suspicious,” Lamya Agarwala, supervising attorney for the organization, said in a statement. “Using this policy to arrest protesters is an affront to our fundamental rights as Americans.”

The Los Angeles branch of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, also known as CAIR-LA, denounced the charges and called the misdemeanors a “nationwide effort by law enforcement, elected officials and universities” to stop “pro-Palestinian activism on campus.”

Omar Altamimi is a senior policy advocate for the Council on American Islamic Relations. He believes UC Davis’ notorious handling of the “Occupy” protests in 2011—when a campus officer pepper sprayed students sitting in the quad—is guiding their policy now.

“Pepper spray incident, terrible,” Altamimi said. “I think that it still influences their decision today to not ask for more military equipment.”
