CAIR Welcomes U.S. Recognition of Genocidal War Crimes in Sudan, Condemns ‘Extreme Hypocrisy’ of Silence on Gaza Genocide

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed U.S. recognition of genocidal war crimes in Sudan and condemned the Biden administration’s “extreme hypocrisy” on Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

The Biden administration said that a Sudanese paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and its proxies, are committing genocide in that nation’s civil war.

In a statement, CAIR National Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said:

“We welcome the U.S. government’s long overdue decision to explicitly renounce the so-called Rapid Support Forces and condemn the genocidal war crimes its forces have committed during Sudan’s civil war. The United States should publicly demand that the RSF surrender and that the Sudanese military transfer power to a representative, democratically-elected government.

“At the same time, the Biden administration’s recognition of genocide in Sudan highlights the extreme hypocrisy of its support for the genocide in Gaza. Genocide is genocide, regardless of whether Israeli or Sudanese forces commit it. No one will take the United States seriously if we only selectively oppose genocide.”

Yesterday, CAIR applauded Ireland for joining South Africa’s case against Israel’s genocide in Gaza before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Last year, CAIR welcomed a detailed submission by South Africa to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) outlining evidence of Israel’s violation of the 1948 Genocide Convention in its war on Gaza.

Also last year, CAIR applauded the International Criminal Court (ICC) for issuing arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister for war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza genocide.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
