The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on the Trump administration to stop the Israeli government’s attempts to sabotage U.S. diplomatic efforts by again opening fire on Palestinian civilians in violation of the Gaza ceasefire deal and launching deadly attacks on the West Bank that have rendered the Jenin refugee camp “uninhabitable.”
Israeli forces have continued their deadly raid in Jenin in the occupied West Bank, destroying infrastructure and forcing the displacement of about 2,000 families. The operations on Wednesday included bulldozing key streets and came a day after ground and air attacks killed at least 10 people across Jenin governorate. The West Bank director of UNRWA, the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, said Jenin camp was “nearly uninhabitable”.
In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:
“These attacks on the West Bank and ceasefire violations in Gaza show that the Israeli government is hellbent on thwarting the Trump administration’s diplomatic efforts and slaughtering as many Palestinians as it can get away with slaughtering. We urge President Trump to take action to ensure that the Israeli government stops its war on the West Bank and stop violating the Gaza ceasefire deal that his administration worked hard to secure.”
He noted that CAIR previously condemned Israeli government for its ongoing escalation of human rights abuses against the Palestinian people, including letting Israeli settlers burn homes across the West Bank, shooting a teenage boy and his rescuer in violation of the Gaza ceasefire, and launching a massive attack on the Jenin refugee camp in an attempt to turn it into “the next Gaza.”
