The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today applauded Belize for seeking to join South Africa’s case against Israel’s genocide in Gaza before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Belize filed an application for permission to intervene and a declaration of intervention in the case, referring to Articles 62 and 63 of the ICJ Statute.
Earlier this month, CAIR applauded Ireland for joining South Africa’s case.
Last year, CAIR welcomed a detailed submission by South Africa to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) outlining evidence of Israel’s violation of the 1948 Genocide Convention in its war on Gaza.
Also last year, CAIR applauded the International Criminal Court (ICC) for issuing arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister for war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza genocide.
[NOTE: Today Belize, Bolivia, Cuba, Colombia, Honduras, Malaysia, Namibia, Senegal, and South Africa formed The Hague Group, aimed at upholding international law and supporting “the realization of the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.”]
In a statement, CAIR said:
“We commend Belize for joining the growing list of nations taking a principled stand against Israel’s genocide in Gaza. In a more just world, every nation around the globe–including the United States, the European countries that claim to care about human rights, and all of the Muslim-majority nations that express solidarity with the Palestinian people–would join this case.”
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
