The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a federal hate crime charge for a Mississippi man who allegedly set fire to a church in that state.
Stefan Day was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges related to the July 2024 vandalism and burning of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Wiggins, Mississippi.
“We welcome the charges in this disturbing case as a strong indication that allegedly bias-motivated attacks on houses of worship will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
He noted that earlier this week, CAIR’s Kansas chapter welcomed the arrest of a man suspected of vandalizing a Catholic church in Wichita.
Hooper said Washington, D.C., based CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
