Good News Alert: CAIR Wins Victory for Muslim Incarcarees Punished for Praying in Mississippi

CAIR Legal Defense Fund is excited to share that, through its advocacy efforts, three Muslim men incarcerated at a federal correctional institution in Mississippi were released from segregation housing after being unfairly accused of intimidating a corrections officer.

In October 2024, a group of Muslim men were praying in congregation in the yard of their facility due to ongoing construction within the building.

Though the men engaged in their prayers calmly and were present in the yard because it was the only available space, the men were written up for the incident and sentenced to seven days in segregation housing.

The men contacted CAIR Legal Defense Fund in December 2024, after spending more than two months separated from the general population and amid threats of transfer to another facility.

CAIR Legal Defense Fund stepped in and issued a demand letter to the facility, calling on the facility to both release the men from segregation and halt all plans of transfer.

Consequently, the men were released back into general population, transfer procedures were halted, and the men will have their records expunged of this incident.

CAIR Legal Defense Fund is dedicated to fighting for the rights of incarcerated Muslims to allow them to fully practice their religion without fear of punishment in carceral settings.
