CAIR Welcomes Renaming of 2 Virginia Schools Originally Named for Racist Figures

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the renaming of two schools in Virginia’s Loudoun County previously named for racist historical figures.

Loudoun County’s Mercer Middle School and Frances Hazel Reid Elementary School, named for a founding member of an organization advocating the deportation of Black people and a founding member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy respectively, will become Gum Spring Middle School and Mildred and Richard Loving Elementary School.

“We applaud Loudoun County for renaming these schools and encourage other counties in Virginia and nationwide to do the same with any schools named for racist historical personalities or those linked to the white supremacist Confederacy,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper

He said CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of racist and Confederate names, holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
