CAIR Welcomes President Trump’s Removal of Sanctions on Syria

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed President Trump’s removal of sanctions on Syria.

President Donald Trump said he will order the end of sanctions against Syria to “give them a chance of greatness” in an effort to normalize relations with the new Syrian government.

In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:

“We commend President Trump for announcing the removal of all Assad-related sanctions imposed on the liberated nation of Syria. This is an important and welcome step.

“We also encourage President Trump to demand that the Israeli government stop bombing Syria and withdraw from the Syrian territory it has illegally occupied.

“The Syrian people must be able to rebuild their nation free from foreign sanctions, occupation and interference.”

Awad added that Trump must also force Israel to lift it siege on Gaza, which is starving the entire Palestinian population. “Give the Palestinian people a chance to stay alive,” said Awad.
