On November 3rd, 2024, detective John Murphy was off duty when he reportedly encountered an employee who was conducting a routine inspection of local cellphone towers while in a company vehicle. Murphy allegedly questioned the victim about his activity on the block, yelled slurs at him, and damaged pieces of his vehicle. The victim was also injured due to fragments from a broken light that Murphy had ripped off of his vehicle. Murphy was arrested on November 13th and was arraigned on an indictment for hate crime and aggravated harassment charges this week.
In a statement, CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher, Esq. said:
“It is critical that we continue to prosecute and monitor hate crimes in our community. There is a history of prejudice and brutality among law enforcement disproportionately impacting people of color. We are pleased to see the District Attorney’s office taking action, and we hope to see justice for the alleged victim of this heinous attack.”
