The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, again today called on the Trump administration to demand the release of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the Gazan doctor who walked toward Israeli tanks in an iconic video, and who has been held for one year without charge or trial after being kidnapped by Israeli forces.
In the past year, CAIR repeatedly called on American officials and the American Medical Association (AMA) to demand the release of Dr. Abu Safiya.
In a statement, CAIR said:
“Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya’s continued detention without charge or trial is a blatant violation of international law and a chilling symbol of the Israeli occupation’s assault on Gaza’s healthcare system. During this genocide, the Israeli occupation murdered hundreds of healthcare workers and destroyed most of Gaza’s medical facilities. Our government must not remain silent while a doctor who upheld his ethical duty to care for the wounded is imprisoned indefinitely by a military funded with American taxpayer dollars. The Trump administration and members of Congress should demand Dr. Abu Safiya’s immediate release and accountability for Israel’s crimes committed against medical personnel.”
CAIR also urged the members of Congress and medical institutions nationwide to publicly call for Dr. Abu Safiya’s release.
A U.N. Human Rights Office report condemning Israeli attacks on hospitals in Gaza said in part: “The destruction of the healthcare system in Gaza, and the extent of killing of patients, staff, and other civilians in these attacks, is a direct consequence of the disregard of international humanitarian and human rights law.”
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
