On Thursday, Owda also announced she had joined the Palestinian-owned social media app UpScrolled, which is gaining increasing popularity as a censorship-free alternative to major platforms like TikTok.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations recently commended UpScrolled for “protecting free speech” amidst TikTok’s “censorship spree.”

Meanwhile, other local activists are gearing up for what they call a second massive shutdown in Minneapolis on Friday.

It’s all set to take place at 2:00 p.m. at the Government Plaza in downtown Minneapolis, with organizers aiming to surpass the scale of the January 23 demonstration that drew an estimated 100,000 participants.

Organizer and Executive Director of the Council on American–Islamic Relations, Jaylani Hussein, says Minnesota is leading the nation at this moment.

“We did not choose this moment, but this moment chose us,” says Hussein. “We are standing up for our neighbors and by doing so we are showing the rest of the country how to defeat ICE.”

“We welcome these federal charges for the attack on Representative Ilhan Omar as an important step toward accountability and justice,” CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said in a statement. “The dangerous climate of dehumanization that inevitably leads to such violent acts puts public servants and entire communities at risk.”

But Musa Tariq, a policy coordinator with the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said the decision could have a “chilling” effect for educators trying to teach about the war in Gaza across the state.

“There have been coordinated efforts to restrict how Palestine is being discussed in classrooms,” he told KQED. “This decision, unfortunately, is something that will be cited statewide and can embolden complaints designed to intimidate educators rather than addressing real discrimination.”
