The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights, and advocacy organization, today condemned the inclusion and advancement of Section 224 of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) in the House Armed Services Committee. CAIR urges the Senate Armed Services Committee to remove Section 224 from the NDAA and calls on members of the House of Representatives to reject the provision should it advance to the House floor.
During committee consideration of the NDAA, Representative Ro Khanna (D-CA) introduced an amendment to strike Section 224, warning that the provision originated from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and would further entrench U.S.-Israeli military integration and that this provision seeks to institutionalize military cooperation in ways that could endure for decades. The amendment ultimately failed.
The NDAA is scheduled for a full Senate Committee mark up on Wednesday, June 10th.
ACTION: Contact the Senate Armed Services Committee to reject Section 224
In a statement, CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert S. McCaw said:
“Section 224 represents a dangerous attempt to permanently fuse elements of the American and Israeli military intelligence and technology in ways that could outlast any single administration, Congress, or political moment. Meanwhile, the Israeli government continues its reign of terror over civilians with mass murder, rape, and torture. They don’t even spare humanitarian workers. Congress should be strengthening oversight and accountability, not embedding deeper military, intelligence, and technological ties that future administrations may find difficult to unwind.
“The American people deserve an independent foreign policy guided by American interests, American values, and accountability to American taxpayers. Congress should not reward or enable policies that contribute to an ongoing genocide. The Senate must reject Section 224 and ensure that the United States does not lock itself into an even deeper military partnership that limits future policymakers’ ability to pursue peace, accountability, and diplomatic solutions.”
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
