CAIR-MN Welcomes Rochester Public Schools Addition of Eid al-Adha to Calendar

The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the decision of Rochester Public Schools to add the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha to its academic calendar for next year.

[NOTE: Eid ul-Fitr (EED-al-FITTER), or “feast of fast-breaking,” is the first of the two major Muslim holidays after the end of the month-long fast of Ramadan. Many communities hold multicultural bazaars and other family activities following prayers. The second holiday, Eid ul-Adha (EED-al-ODD-ha), comes near the end of the Hajj, or pilgrimage to Mecca.]

“We welcome this decision by Rochester Public Schools to include the holiday of its Muslim students in the academic calendar,” said CAIR-MN Executive Director Jaylani Hussein. “Students of every faith should have the right to observe their religious holidays without being penalized for it.”

He noted that earlier this year, CAIR released its Eid Everywhere Campaign Toolkit, a resource developed to help parents, students, educators, CAIR chapters, and community advocates secure recognition and religious accommodations for Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha in K–12 schools and colleges nationwide.

CAIR has previously welcomed school districts nationwide for recognizing Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
