The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned an Israeli court’s acquittal of a settler who assaulted a Christian nun in Jerusalem’s Old City.
An Israeli court has acquitted Yona Schreiber, an Israeli settler residing in the occupied West Bank settlement of Peduel, of charges related to the late April assault on a Christian nun in Jerusalem’s Old City.
In a statement, CAIR said:
“We strongly condemn the Israeli government’s unconscionable but predictable decision to acquit and free the Israeli settler who attacked a nun from behind in the occupied West Bank, slamming her to the ground in a clear and deliberate attempt to murder her. The Israeli government does not respect the rule of law, or the rights of Christians or Muslims to live freely on their own land. We call on members of Congress and American Christian leaders—especially those who have spent years arguing that funding the Israeli government’s crimes is a divine mandate—to speak out in defense of this nun and the countless other people of faith victimized by the Israeli government and the settlers it protects.
CAIR previously condemned the assault.
CAIR has consistently condemned Israel’s persecution of Christians.
