Discovery in UK Offers Opportunity to ‘Share the Quran’
Earliest fragments re-confirm unchanged nature of the holy text

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 7/23/15) — The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today cited a discovery of what may be the earliest fragments of the Quran as an opportunity for Americans of all faiths to increase their understanding of the holy text and to challenge growing Islamophobia.

Researchers at the University of Birmingham say the fragments, part of Sura Taha, may have been transcribed by a contemporary of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

That sura begins: (Muhammad Asad English translation with commentary)

“We did not bestow the Quran on thee from on high to make thee unhappy, but only as an exhortation to all who stand in awe : a revelation from Him who has created the earth and the high heavens – the Most Gracious, established on the throne of His almightiness.”

“We ask Americans of all faiths and backgrounds to use the opportunity offered by this new discovery to obtain or share a copy of the Quran and to use it as an educational tool to help challenge the rising level of Islamophobia in our society,” said CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad.

He urged members of the public to obtain a FREE (s/h only) English translation of the Quran through CAIR’s “Share the Quran” initiative.
