CAIR ACTION ALERT: Urge your Senator to Support Sen. Kaine’s Resolution Forbidding Unauthorized U.S. War on Iran

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, calls on all Americans to urge their Senators to sponsor and support Senator Tim Kaine’s (D-VA) joint resolution (S.J.Res 59) to prevent the Trump administration from involving U.S. armed forces in a war with Iran that Congress has not authorized.

Senator Kaine’s resolution invokes the War Powers Resolution to reassert Congress’s constitutional authority over matters of war, requiring that any future military action against Iran must be approved by Congress through a declaration of war or a specific Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF).

The Constitution clearly states that only Congress has the power to declare war. Yet, time and again, President Trump has stretched the boundaries of executive power, sidestepping Congress to engage in military operations with no debate, no vote, and no accountability to the American people.

Now, with Israel’s deadly escalation against Iran and rising regional tensions, the risk of the U.S. being pulled into another endless, unauthorized war is greater than ever. We must act to stop it.

In a statement CAIR Government Affairs Director said“The American people are tired of being pulled into endless wars they never asked for and that Congress never approved. Senator Kaine’s resolution is a common-sense step to make sure no president can bypass the Constitution and launch military action without accountability. We urge every senator to support this resolution and put the power to declare war back where it belongs—in the hands of the people’s representatives.”
