Urge State Speaker to Block Voting on Broad Child Agency Placement Bill

CAIR-logo(SOUTHFIELD, MI, 10/2/2013) – CAIR-MI today joined other advocates against the introduction of Michigan House Bill No. 4991, which would grant child placement agencies the right to object to placing children in particular foster homes based upon their religious or moral convictions. This bill if it becomes law would not guarantee Muslim children placement into Muslim foster homes.

Introduced earlier this year, this bill would allow broad discretion for organizations receiving state funding to discriminate against placing children with appropriate foster families based upon subjective means.

ACTION: Call or send an email to Michigan State Speaker of the House Jase Bolger to oppose the introduction of House Bill No. 4991, which would allow discretion of placement agencies to deny placing children in suitable foster care homes based upon moral subjectivity.

“We believe that it is inappropriate for agencies receiving state funding to have the ability to discriminate as to how children are placed in foster care homes based upon their religious or moral convictions.  We cannot simply trust the goodwill of organizations to place children in suitable homes for the children’s well-being in which those entities could have religious and political biases against certain segments of the population,” said CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid.
Walid said Muslim children in Michigan have been placed in homes of people of other faiths in which Islamic norms have been ignored.  If this bill becomes law, state-funded agencies could potentially further this practice.
CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
