For once, ABC turned cameras from celebrity interviews and the presidential election to display America’s attitude toward people who wear head scarves, grow beards and pray five times a day, facing Mecca.

At a Texas bakery, the network staged a Muslim woman trying to buy apple strudel and being refused by the sales clerk. In the store, many customers defended the clerk and said the woman wasn’t “dressed right” and that “a person who owns his own business should be able to say who they sell to.”

I’d brush off the broadcast for being in a state that prides itself on cattle and wide-brimmed hats, but hatred towards Muslims extends beyond the rodeos and barbeque pits.

Across the country, anti-Islamic hate crimes quadrupled between 2000 and 2006, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
