A Saturday panel presentation will discuss the role of women in Islam.

Muslim women and other members of the community will speak at the Tracy Public Library event about the rights women have in Islamic countries; what the Quran says about women; and the cultural, economic and political impact of women.

“Some of the biggest misconceptions are that women are very ignorant and submissive,” said Christine Chase, 45, a Muslim convert from Santa Clara who will be one of the panelists. “But Islam teaches the opposite. It teaches women to be strong and independent.”

WHEN: 1:30 p.m. Saturday
WHERE: Tracy Public Library, 20 East Eaton Ave.
Admission: Free
Information: (209) 937-8221

The idea came from a series of discussions the Tracy Islamic Outreach Center held in libraries in Tracy and Stockton.

These programs have offered basic information about Islam, seeking to dispel myths and help people be better neighbors. A lot of the audience questions, however, concerned the role of women in the religion and the countries that follow it, organizer Riaz Hasan said.
