The Islamic Center of Modesto will be building a badly needed mosque on North Carpenter Road, although many neighbors of the center aren’t happy about it.
The Stanislaus County Planning Commission unanimously approved the proposed two-story, 17,000-square-foot mosque at 1445 N. Carpenter Road on Thursday. It will replace three buildings on the site that total 2,700 square feet.
The Islamic Center congregation totals about 150 families. During some worship services, participants can’t all fit in the buildings, and spill out into the parking lot. The new building will include a prayer area, meeting rooms and multipurpose rooms, according to Dr. Hassan M. Hussain, a Modesto cardiologist and member of the congregation.
Several members of the congregation spoke about the need for the new mosque, citing space for youth groups and education rooms, and room to invite the public in to learn about Islam. (MORE)
