Congresswoman Lois Capps was honored May 14 by the Central Coast Islamic Center of Santa Maria and the Central Coast chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. The groups held a round-table meeting with Capps to discuss social issues currently facing Muslims on the Central Coast and throughout the United States. The conversation centered on post-Sept. 11 attitudes toward Muslims in America and concern over whether consequential acts of government, like the Patriot Act, infringe on civil liberties. “What we request of you (Capps) is to enlighten the rest of Americans about Muslims, about Islam, about who we are and what we do,” said Mohammed Diab, a participant in the meeting. The group hopes to inform Americans with other cultural and religious beliefs about the positive attributes of Islam, and to remove the association many people have in their minds between Islam and terrorism.
