MD: FREDERICK MOSQUE VANDALIZED
Two basement windows of a mosque in Frederick were broken between Saturday night and yesterday morning — the third act of vandalism there this year, police reported.
There are no suspects in any of the incidents, and police are not investigating them as hate crimes, said Sgt. Wade Brown of the Frederick Police Department. Windows at the Islamic Society of Frederick were broken in two previous incidents, and a car in the parking lot was vandalized, he said.
Police were called to the Islamic Society building in the 1200 block of Key Parkway — a recently renovated, light-blue house where lessons on the Quran and in the Arabic language are offered — about 8:45 a.m. yesterday when the vandalism was discovered. In addition to the broken windows, the contents of a fire extinguisher were sprayed into the mosque’s basement.
Khalil Elshazly, the mosque’s former president, said there are plans to construct a fence around the building and add surveillance cameras in an effort to deter further vandalism.
