A national chain bookstore that originally indicated it would allow a Palestinian-American author to hold a discussion of her book in a Bay Terrace bookstore this week decided after receiving dozens of angry calls to only allow her to hold a signing.

Susan Abulhawa, the 36-year-old author of “Scar of David,” said she was frustrated but not surprised that she would not be permitted to read from her novel in the Barnes & Noble bookstore in Bay Terrace this Thursday.

“Of course. I am disappointed that the store would cave to that kind of racist pressure,” she said in a telephone interview this week. “The people complaining didn’t even read the book. I would be happy to discuss what parts of the book they found offensive.”
